Video: Foothills Trail Solo A4-A5 & Back

What started about 4 weeks ago as a trip plan to go to Shinning Rock Wilderness and have my dad try out a hammock for the first time changed with the weather. My dad says that his bad weather camping trips are now confined to an RV. After a short debate with myself and having my gear already packed, I switched out my map and headed out on the Foothills Trail for my second solo trip.
This was my first trip were I headed out with the knowledge that I was going to get rained on. So, I did a few things different. 1) I changed how I keep my gear dry: all cuben dry bags (lighter than a sil pack cover and able to keep things dryer than a cuben pack cover). 2) I set up my tarp first with the intention of being rained on (normally I do not have to deploy my tarp). Plus this one is cuben and I was looking forward to seeing how it preformed. 3) Having nothing to do with the rain, I tried Aquamira drop for the first time using Antigravity Gear's Lightwater kit.
A change I will make next time I go out and it is to be wet, and maybe just when it is hot: Hydropel for...down...stairs.

    Without further adieu:

    Great video...really enjoyed it!

One tip when you're filling the platypus is to take a second one along that has been cut at an angle to make a nice and light water scoop. It helps tremendously!

I do not have to be scared off any more. A little rain didn't hurt me. I'm glad you enjoyed.

Interesting tip. I thought about using my pot to do the same kind of thing where I wouldn't be carrying any extra weight. I'll keep this in mind as walking up/ down stream to a small cascade helped but may not always be available.

Thanks for sharing your journey with us. We are so fortunate to have the Foothills Trail in our area, it really is a great trail. I plan on doing a yo-yo hike of the Jocassee Gorges section in a few weeks. Need to get back in shape and that tough little section should do the trick. Give me a shout if you need a hiking partner sometime.

I'm glad you like the videos. You're welcome to join me for a hike sometime. I do like my water sources to be running. While I was walking by Virgina Hawkins Falls everything smelled green and alive. It was invigorating.

When I do my quick thru hike of the FHT, I think I may do a "highlight reel"/promo. Nice idea. I was really surprised by the amount of light the Dutch light put out. Before I went out on the trail I sanded down the bulb to diffuse the ight some and replaced the clip with some 1.2mm tech line so I could larkshead it to the tarp ridgeline.
I'd love to do a bikepacking trip, but all I have is a bike and my backpack rather than the bike bags...maybe I'll DIY a few, hmm. I've never tried making a waterproof bag with a zipper before. Those trails look nice, but I have to work around my weekend work schedule and of course make my wife a priority. Thanks for the invite, I probably will be unavailable those weekends, but if something changes I'll let you know.
