    DIY Ponch Liner UQ ?

Would a poncho liner work as a UQ until I get the $ for a "real" one ? Perhaps doubled up ? Thanks

Yes. Lots of instructions available right here on the forum for the price of a search.

    Here ya go.

Many other threads to sort thru, but this one from dejoha is probably the holy grail on poncho liners.

    Welcome to the forum.
I'm a big fan of the dejoha No Sew PLUQ. Simple to make and deploy. I've only used it to the mid 50's but it worked well.

I looked at dejoha's ideas and am very impressed. I have a poncho liner already so I will try and put one together until I can manage a down UQ. Thank you all for the help.

And note that you can take it lower than the 40s or 50s with supplemental insulation. I've personally used the sewn-up version, with one layer of Insul-Fleece (a mylar-backed polyester fleece batting) added to it down to 24* F successfully, by adding a torso-sized pad.

I've used this system as low as 21* F, though on that trip, my toes were cold due to not having proper socks. I was also a little chilly due to leaving some of my supplemental top insulation (my sweatshirt) at home. My bottom, however, was warm.

Note, though, that I'm a very warm sleeper. A poncho liner and a pad on the ground, by themselves, would be good for me down to around freezing if I had a good windbreak.

That caveat aside, you can extend the range of a PLUQ with good supplemental insulation. A torso-sized CCF pad works wonders.

My kids and another friend have had they sew-up PLUQs (with a layer of polyester quilt batting inside) down into the mid-20s with no additional bottom insulation. A couple of them got a little cool but had no major complaints. My youngest daughter was toasty warm with hers at 25...but she's a walking furnace like me...

Mine has no additional insulation inside and I've been just fine in it down into the mid to low 30s...

I made and used the poncho liner UQ this past weekend for an overnighter in the Berkshires. I also put a windshield reflactor thing between the layers of my dbl layer Blackbird. The overnight temp got down to 42 degrees. I was toasty. Very happy. I do plan on getting a down UQ for sure. Less volume .
