Industrial Suspension??

I have an ENO Doublenest and am making a trip this weekend with some friends.

I haven't had a chance to use the hammock yet so this shall be its maiden voyage.

I do not wish to use the SlapStraps since I heard they stretch and have no desire to wake up on the ground.

I'd like to use webbing in place of the SlapStraps.

My question is could buy a set of ratchet straps from Home Depot or Walmart and use that webbing?

I have no problem cutting them up for just the webbing.

There aren't any places around here (Baton Rouge, Louisiana) that I know of where I could just buy webbing.

I've heard that polyester is the thing to get as far as webbing goes.

Any ideas, comments or suggestions?

You could do that. As you mentioned, polyester is the way to go. How are you planning on attaching the webbing to your hammock? Are you keeping the stock rope and carabiner? If you do not have the time to look into some other suspension options you can simply attach the new webbing to the carabiner using a clove hitch.

Use the webbing from a ratchet strap for now.... Cut off the hooks that comes with ratchet straps... Remove the carbiners from the hammock.. Install the carabiners from the hammock into the loops of the webbing.. Wrap the webbing around the tree, and lock in place with carabiners.. Use a marlin spike hitch in the webbing, and slide the loops from the factory rope in the hammock over the toggle and hang... I believe I'm gonna get rid of the factory carabiner and make a toggle to use with the factory loop.

I'm gonna bring a bunch of stuff and play around with my options.

At least be careful what quality ratchet straps you buy. I don't think ANY are designed for use where human safety is involved. However, some of those straps are much worse than others. I have some you can practically see through, but then I only use it to hold stuff inside my pickup truck bed. Wouldn't ever use it to hold me up in the air.

For what it's worth, a common rule of thumb used by professional riggers (tree surgeons, crane operators, etc) is 10-to-1. That's 10 lbs of rated breaking strength for every lb being lifted. If you weigh 200 lbs, you want a 2,000 lb strap, going by that rule of thumb. Anything less than that and you're rolling the dice with your backbone over some rock or root.
