Fabric ID

I know fabric ID has been discussed before, but could not find general things to look for in a fabric when I tried to search the forum.

Are there any hard, fast rules that help ID the specific fabric materials (beyond the obvious "it weighs x" and such?)

For instance: does nylon catch fire while poly just melts? Vice versa? Are there simple tests to determine what I'm seeing in (buying from) the WallyWorld bin?

Again, sorry if I missed a prior thread, I just didn't see it. TIA,

I can tell you that the gray material I bought from walmart usually burns and self extinguishes, with a sweet chemical odor and forms small balls.

They don't have an option for the one time where it burned rapidly up to my finger and melted to it, still on fire.. I think I'll say it's ripstop polyester.
