    Hi from Ottawa, Ontario

Wow! What a wealth of ideas on this site!
I love it, except for the excessive hours consumed... :-(

I came across this site while researching the various off-the-shelf hammock setups for a possible kayak camping trip this summer.

Peak/Portec hammocks have always accompanied our canoe trips as a luxury item for daytime lounging in comfort. We started with one hammock, then the kids evicted us... not saying how many hammocks exist now...but there is always room for one more.

Given that I already have multiple hammocks & tarps, I'll start with what I have and see what works or not for me.

All that is definitely missing is the bug protection. My present thoughts are adding a shock cord ridge line to the hammock for support of a DIY bug tube made from long retired tents.

Oh ya, I also have a fish net hammock that the kids use as a swing/catapult while we break camp.

Welcome! Lots of Ontario hangers here that have and do get together every so often. There were two Algonquin canoe trips last year plus a recent snow shoe trip to Algonquin.

Don't forget you'll need bottom insulation. You may find your back gets cold at night even in the hot summer weather due to heat loss from convection. You can use a sleeping bag as top insulation and can sew up an old sleeping bag into an underquilt.

Keep an eye out for trip planning threads with "EGL" or "Eastern Great Lakes" in the title.

Thanks for the pointers to EGL trips, I was able to find the past events.

I must admit that I skipped the under quilt references. I do have a light thermarest, but I already know how that will work out -- especially since it walks when contained on a flat tent floor. I will have to investigate the UQ options and attachments.

    Welcome!

I just love Ottawa! It's a big playground for the great outdoors. You live in a wonderful city. Lots of culture and so many restaurant patios.

For just getting started as a hanger you can do pretty good using sleeping bags and pads that you already have in your camping gear. Pads are pretty warm, just some people find they're not super comfortable.

It's also possible to suspend a bag without modifying the sleeping bag like a quilt or use it like a pod. There's a few threads here on doing that. With some minor sewing you can convert an old sleeping bag into a good underquilt.

Using a military surplus poncho liner or USGI "woobi" is another interesting option you'll see in the threads here.

LOL, a matter of perspective really. You're talking about the rather large portion of the day taken up by having to be at work right? You know what they say... do you live to work or work to live?

    Hey from across the river!!!
all I can think you might need to start is a bug net (M.E.C. has some in store for the portec) or easy to DIY (Hennessey Hammock clone)
    see you out there!!!

Howdy from deep in the heart of Toronto!!!

As Bubba said, there's a pretty active group of Ontarians that get together to hike, canoe and car-camp. It's always a good time.
