New to hammock camping and needing to keep warm

So, next week I'm planning a backpacking trip and planning to replace the tent with a hammock for the first time. It should only get down to the 50s at night, so I'm wondering what the easiest and quickest thing for me to do would be. I'm sure I'll be investing in an underquilt sometime down the line, but I haven't found anything for what I can do quick.

If it involves a sleeping bag, that would help because I already have a <30°F bag I've used for camping before. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

Yes, a sleeping bag will do in a pinch, just unzip it and spread it out over you. But don't forget about insulation underneath you, if you try and simply put your sleeping bag in the hammock and then get into the bag, you will get cold underneath due to the compression of bag's insulation. I would suggest using a pad, either an inflatable or closed cell foam pad. Here's a video that Shug put together about this very subject.

Like Lilricky said, you'll need insulation under you and that can simply be cheap Walmart blue foam pads. They need to be 24" - 30" wide, but that's why they make duct tape!

Excellent! At least i'm not the only one shuffling around in my hammock like a moth in a chrysalis.

As it turns out, I already have one of those blue Walmart pads, so it looks like I might be okay. Thanks for all the help!

It's important to try out your system before you go to be sure it does the job. It's a lot easier to work it out at home then in the middle of the woods in the dark.

+1 on this and I'll add "cold & rain" to "dark."

That's what I was thinking. I'm hoping to sleep out in my yard one night this week to try it all out.

I camped out last night in my hammock. I had a thick fleece blanket inside a sleeping bag. It got down to about 40 and I didn't have any cold spots on my back. I was warm as could be. The two tent campers I was with were complaining about the cold ground the next morning.

what's the insulation in the sleeping bag? if it's man made you probably can get enought protection for the 50 degree night temps with the bag alone. at least it's worth a try in the back yard.
