I was comfortable down to 39* using my pad and my 20* Mummy bag. I used my mummy bag as a top quilt. Slept in under armor and a clean pair of hiking socks. Threw a light coat over my head and slept like a baby. I did have a PLUQ just in case but I never needed it.

I've slept in my hammock down to about 45deg F with my mil issue sleeping bag and no pad at all underneath the hammock with no problem at all.

I've also suspected that a large part of my "success" with the HHSS system where so many others have failed is because I use a sleeping bag and not a top quilt.

I've had pretty much no issue with condensation in the HHSS, with or without the space blanket.

I believe that you get some small amount of value of the insulation underneath you in a synthetic bag, but very obviously not as much as you get from what's on top of you. I also believe that you retain more warmth because there's less loss due to leakage when using a sleeping bag vs a TQ.

I've not tried sleeping in my hammock on top of a pad inside the hammock...but I've spent more nights than I can count sleeping in a bag on a pad on the ground.

I haven't had the chance to try using an underquilt yet, but given my success so far with sleeping bag and HHSS, I probably won't for quite some time unless someone opts to donate a UQ to me...LOL!

So for me...the only "negative" to a sleeping bag has been when I've used one that was too small for me and it was difficult to adjust my position inside of it while in the hammock. Other than that...my experience using a sleeping bag in a hammock has been all positive.
