How do I use a Hammock as ground bivy?

Hello everyone! I'm a Hammock newbie...not totally converted yet, but 75% there! I met some Hammock Hangers at the SoRuck and became very interested it. I had been looking for a lighter weight tent than my current one. But, now maybe not!

Anyhoo, I came home from the Ruck to discover the hammock I had received as a gift a few years back is an ENO. Wheeeee! I've already set it up on my backporch, with a ridgerest and my 30 degree down bag in 47 degree weather for just a short nap to see how I liked it and I LOVE it!!! (do ya'll use down or synthetic, by the way??? Is it personal pref?)

So, I can not find any pictures or directions of how you set up your hammock as a bivy on the ground, if you are in a tree barren area. Can some kind soul please enlighten me or point me to a webpage?

    Thank you!

    Suzy

    Aloha Suzy,
A Warm Welcome to the Hangin' Crowd swingin' from the trees!

Most use the tarp when you find yourself in a tree less area.
You can put a hammock over you like a bivy bag to help as well.
Some hammocks do turn into bivy tents but not the lot you see mostly listed here. (Siam Hammocks)
The HH can as well but must be supported by two trekking pole...and it is so hard to crawl into afterwards due to the bottom opening.

Just put up your tarp...put down your sleeping pad and bag and wrap yourself up in your hammock...and you are set to go

Welcome to this site and the trees.

I use down for weight reasons, others use syn for water reasons. I haven't had any problems yet. I think it is more likely to get wet in your pack than setup with my hammock and tarp. But that is an arguement all in itself.

I haven't yet set my hammock up on the ground. If I need to I would use my poles as Hana H. said. I would only use the hammock if I needed bug protection. Right now I use a DIY hammock. It is similar to the Speer design. I use a seperate bugnet. I can set crawl in that if I need to and get away from the bugs. I also can crawl into my hammock sock if I need some extra warmth.

There are pics of these in my gallery if you need to see any of this.

I forgot to add, Risk said it best when asked what he does if he cannot find any trees. "I keep walking."

Yah...you tagged me! Suzyqhoo or is that who???

I'm excited! February is filled with work, but I have something planned for March!

I'm going Mobile/Dauphin Island soon for work/R&R. My friend that lives on DI has one of those houses up on stilts! I'm gonna hang that puppy up underneath the house, listen to the ocean sounds and swing away!!! Wheee!

Thanks for the warm welcome and all the great info!!!

    I prefer down...

While I like synthetics, the weight & loft characteristics of down (not to mention durability) make it my choice.

JacksRBetter (.com) make stuff that's worked well for me and plenty of others. Their quilts are much easier to get in/out of and to reposition in when using a hammock.

    My2cents...and WELCOME!

    welcome!

My thoughts on a non-Hennessy ground pitch: (as opposed to tarp camping)
    *pros*
    bug protection
keep sleeping "stuff" together, where it's supposed to be
    some privacy
    *cons*
    getting in
wear on bottom of hammock (no no no.. I would put my pad under the hammock, plus ground sheet- but as a hammocker, do I carry a ground sheet? Poncho? you don't want to hole that either.)
    needs poles...

Trekking poles are on sale this month, I got to go in and get me some.

anyway, I won't bore you with more of my ramblings.
