It puts the Underquilt on it's hammock ... It does this whenever it gets cold
I understand how you feel. My fun money is limited, but I still wanted to go to the woods and hang. SO, I went to Wally World, bought a $10.00 roll of 3.5 mil black plastic sheeting. It's 10 ft x 25 ft.... I cut off 12 ft, followed a pattern, and made myself a cheap make do tarp while I save up for a better one. It's not super light, but it's cheap and easy to make. I reinforced the edges with tie outs with Gorilla Tape that I had around the house. It rained and I stayed dry.
I can post pictures tonight if you're interested....
I did the same using a piece of clear polyethelene plastic I had in the shed. I reinforced the corners with white duct tape and put mason line loops on each corner. Weight wise its not bad. Mine is 12' on the diagonal and tips the scales at just over one pound un-rigged. Not sure how it will do in a windstorm. Need to pitch it in a gale some day.

I do not, have a tarp either for my Hammock. BUT. I do have a EZ up canopy cover. The structure got destroyed. plus it was Free!!!. I think its 12' x 12' blue with silver inside.
This shall be My tarp, for now. Might add long branch/pole on inside Velcro. Then stake out.
hope it works? have to try..
All the ideas posted here are worth exploring, the plastic, the reuse of some other material and the poly tarp from wmart. Let us know what you end up doing and how it works.
I like the tiny HH Asym tarps. Either the Explorer or Backpacker in 30D Silnylon. http://hennessyhammock.com/catalog/rainflys/ I've been using mine for two years now, no thoughts of "upgrading". To be fair, I do have a larger polycoated DD tarp I can break out if I feel I need it... I just seldom if ever actually do.
i am a big fan of the kelty tarps. they are cheap - $50-65 depending on size, are good quality, and have lots of tie-outs. good bang for the buck. my kelty noahs 12 can be set up in an a-frame configuration with the ends folded inward to make doors. its bomb-proof!
in warmer weather, i just use the eno diamond shape fly, packs small, works great.
