Hey guys im looking at making myself a DIY quilt set, I really don't wan't to cross paths with baffles, not yet at least. Anyway.
I was reading some stuff on the net that was saying sewn through baffles produce really bad cold spots, is this true? I am looking at something to take me to around 35 degrees. Will traditional baffling make the quilt more efficient?
Everything you stated is so true. I will tell you the fear of baffles are real. I have had them for the past 4 years. But as I said I have HAD them. just finished an UQ for my brother a week ago and need to stuff a mini UQ for my son. Baffles really aren't as hard as they seem. With noseeum mesh you can see right through the material so following a chalk like on you fabric is super easy. Go with baffles and I think you will be more satisfied around the 35* mark.

I agree with Jazilla. If that is the temp range you are looking for - I would give a go at baffles. I have also heard that sewn through can be a great deal more difficult to do since you are lining up two very slippery pieces of material and sewing somewhat blind since you can only confirm the side you see.

Are vertical or horizontal baffles better for TQ's?
Im thinking of making a insultex UQ and a down TQ.
I would think Horizontal (across the body) for a TQ. I tend to look at photos of ones available as well there is a great how to sticky in the DIY forum here.
Also, unless you are a warm sleeper - an IX uq may not get you down easily to the temps you would like.

Have no fear of baffles; they are actually easy and straightforward, even for a noob.
At your target temperature, I would definitely go with baffles, not sewn through, to get the performance you want.
I have made sewn through and baffled quilts. For me it's no contest; sewn through was much harder than baffles! You're sewing blind with a sewn through design.

Speaking on the baffle topic and sharing the baffle fear. Is there another option other than the no seeum that can be used? How about the netting from walmart or joanns?
Just about anything can be used for baffles. It does not have to be down proof.

Some people use the lightest cuben fiber (?? .31oz/yd^2 ??)or their baffles. I've read of others using tulle or chiffon.
OWFinc.com sells noseeum ultra (.7oz/yd^2) and is the cheapest place I've found it.

I have always used noseeum for my baffle material. I love that I can see through it for following the chalk lines, I hate pinning material and this helps me avoid it. After feeding another thread on here I may be trying my hand with some M50 but I have to save some funding up for materials first.
Oh and baffles are seriously not bad, I greatly over complicate things and they still only make me cuss a little
