    Sleeping bag conversion

Does anyone have any tips, advice, videos, pictures, diagrams, anything that would help with converting a sleeping bag to an under quilt.

Here are two I did, similar design just different execution. I prefer the way I did it on the red bag.

If you need to buy a sleeping bag,,get a youth model synthetic for about 30 bucks at ****'s as they are about 72 inches long, and all you have to do is cut the zipper off, add some shock chord 3-4 to each end on small s-biners, and they work very well,,January of last year made one, and it was out of a 30 degree youth bag and worked great. The only downfall is the weight, as they will still weigh about 3 pounds or alittle less. Anywhere you need to stitch something you have cut off the bag, if you use nylon thread and a needle, you can hand sew it shut if need be and your good to go if you don't have a thread injector. But like I say,,worked great and liked to burnt up trying it out in the house for a 30 degree model.

My oldest daughter made me one from a syn kid's bag that one of my grandsons had outgrown. Cut the zippers out, added a silnylon cover for the exterior and put shock cords with stoppers in grosgran channels on each end. Fits the WBBB like a glove and comes up to the sides to cover my shoulders. Have not weighed it, but it feels to be about 2#. Compresses down to about 4" diameter x 10" long.

Having tried a down underquilt for the first time yesterday, I am in serious underquilt lust! I have several old synthetic coleman bags with busted zippers in the basement and I am contemplating having a go at them to frankensteeen (not frankenstein :-) ) one into a passable car camping underquilt.
For those of you who have converted a synth bag over to an UQ, did you wind up using most of the bag or were you able to cut it in half length-wise to make two UQs out of it?
I am imagining that I can cut one in half length-wise and remove the zippers. When I sew the fabric back together, I can create channels along the sides for a continuous channel that will allow sliding the quilt toward my head or down to my feet, as well as a channel at the head/foot for some shock cord to allow me to gather/pucker the ends to fit the hammock.
Thoughts? Y'all have been there, done that so I am hoping to follow in someone's footsteps rather than blaze a new trail.
    Thanks in advance- Sarge

Mine was cut wider at the shoulders and tapered at the feet. Weighs in at 2# 1.6oz and actual pack size is 6x12.
Will be going to a down UQ for next year. Older, slower and downsizing my pack.
