I just got a couple of calls from Neo. He kayaked out to an unnamed island on a lake about 20 miles from where he lives, and it's storming like crazy. I could hardly hear him over the rain and wind. He is camping in a Claytor with a stock Claytor tarp. Just thought y'all'd like to know. He told me to tell all of you hi. He said his kayak was sinking after he got to the island or perhaps he meant on the way to the island because he forgot the drain plug, so he made one out of wood to get him home tomorrow.

Dude, that can be scary stuff. Lightning scares the crap out of me. I sat through a storm once that produced winds and 5 inches of rain. That wasn't so bad, what was scary was the lightning. After the rain, lightning moved in and you could literally smell the electricity in the air. I think I will feel much more comfortable in lightning OFF the ground. I keep hearing your stories, and combined with my own experience, it convinces me to stick with my stock Claytor tarp.

I am glad you are safe and sound. I'll bet that was a real adreneline rush bro!

Wet ropes can make excellent conductors. This is BAD news when it comes to lightning activity. If you are mountain climbing and see lightning, and can do so safely, remove unnecessary ropes extended or attached to you. If a rope is extended across a mountain face and lightning makes contact with it, the electrical current will likely travel along the rope, especially if it is wet.


they also caution against metal such as tent poles. So I guess you pays your money and takes your chances... or you stay home.

I would be more worried about lightning striking a tree which causes the tree to explode and a heavy limb falling on me than getting zapped
