What to do with gear in a storm?

So you're sitting around the campfire with fellow hammock buddies. It is sightly cloudy but you don't worry about it because the weather forecast (which you checked before you left for the trail) said it was not going to rain. Then a huge storm rolls in. It's starts to pour rain. I mean, the rain looks like it is blowing sideways. The lighting just keeps flashing, the thunder is roaring, even the river which you're camped next to begins to swell. So you've tied the rain-fly around you in the hammock to keep dry, but where do you put your gear? Obviously, if it is just a light rain coming straight down it won't matter, you just put your gear under your tarp. But what about those very bad storms?

Unless it's a down quilt, let it get wet. Quilts go in a dry bag. Nothing else matters, it will dry and not be hurt.

I hang my pack either on my suspension or on one of my support trees by clipping the haul strap to a carabiner. If it looks like rain, I cover it with a garbage bag that I've poked a small hole in the bottom to access the haul strap. Having my pack at chest level is easier than squatting down on the ground when loading/unloading the pack.

I tend to have everything stored in my pack liner under my hammock most of the time.

It would depend a lot on what the circumstances are for when the rain comes in, the plan for the rest of the trip and what the safe move for everyone on the trip would be. If evening is coming on and we are set up for the night, then all of my non-hanging gear (hammock, quilts, etc) go into my pack with a pack cover on, then covered side lays on the ground ie straps up with it centered under my tarp near the hammock. If I am concerned with blowing rain hitting the pack even under the tarp then I would drape my rain jacket over the top of the whole deal to cover it extra while I lunge in my hammock and wait out the storm.

This is where a gear hammock/pack cover would come in handy.

I hang it off my tarp ridgeline and batten down the hatches. A reading light, a good book, and some hot chocolate are great for riding out a storm. I usually have a piece of 4mm plastic or poncho I can throw over anything left out I don't want wet.

If it looks like that river is going to swell too much, I'm packing my stuff up and head to higher ground. Using my rain cover,m dry sacks and tarp to keep everything dry until I get there.

Great timing on this question...I just got my 2QZQ modded tarp back and posted a thread on it yesterday.

    http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=50357

My answer to "what will you do?" is...

Absolutely nothing. My gear always sits in my backpack under my hammock on top of a trash bag as a ground cloth. All of my "keep dry" gear sits inside a trashbag inside of the backpack.

Given the mods I've had done to my tarp now, all I'd do is make sure that my tarp doors and staked out and velcro'ed close, and double check that I've got the tarp edges down to within a few inches of the ground (which is the height I always hang at).

If it's truly that windy/stormy...I'm more worried about falling limbs being blown through my tarp, or that river you mentioned actually reaching my camp...either issue indicating I'm going to have to evac rather than spend the night there trying to ride it out.

I have a large trash bag that I can fit my bag into for just such an occasion.
Life looks better from a BIAS hammock.
