To me, when I can't carry all my stuff in 1 backpack, when I take non-essential bulky stuff, then it is "camping" altogether.

Imho it is car-camping when the car is part of my camp, i.e. serves as storage for food, clothes, swim gear, etc.

So if I put all my stuff in my pack, walk around the block and into my backyard and camp without going to house or car for gear, am I camping?

Yes. As long as you don't go into the house to use the toilet.

    I agree with that definition

I kind of look at it like this: if I forgot something important, how far would I hike back to the car to retrieve and/or go buy the missing item? And for me, that's about three miles. If I left a porterhouse steak and a bottle of single malt whiskey in the trunk, I'd stash the pack and hike back in a heartbeat for such essential survival items.

I do exactly the same thing!

The State of PA defines car camping as camping where the car is a part of the experience. So as far as they are concerned... if you have vehicles stationed with food and supplies along the route you are hiking... it is car camping. This is a distinction they make to issue camping permits. Primitive camping leaves the vehicle behind. Car camping makes use of a vehicle.

To me car camping is when you can hear car doors slamming, the ding-ding-ding of an ignition key still in the ignition and a door open, car radio playing until the wee hours and headlights lighting up camp when some return from the sports bar in the local village.
