Before you head out, I would do a quick hose test on the tarp to see if sheds water and doesn't leak. There have been issues with the waterproofness of Spinn fabric. That is the reason that they aren't offered by most of the hammock tarp makers at this point.

I second the recommendation to hose test this before your trip. I would give it 50/50 odds of it leaking!

Spinnaker is made for sails and they don't have to be waterproof, only windproof. Occasionly, a lot comes out so good that it is actually waterproof, but that's more of an accident.

Just got back. I didn't get the recs to hose test it before I left, luckily it was crystal clear all night. So before I made it I took some material and laid it over a bowl and put a rubber band around edge to make it taught. Then poured water on top. Waited an hour or so and bowl was completely dry. I will definitely hose test it though to make sure it is completely waterproof.

Ok bad news. I sprayed the hose on it and the water beaded up n ran right off but I felt the underside and it was damp. I guessing a fine mist was able to get through.
Any suggestions?
Do I chalk it up to noob mistake and make a whole lot of kites or maybe a sailboat to use here in desert of Arizona? Haha

yes but. I would be tempted to hang it in the back yard in a heavy rain and see what comes in. You can get some condensation on the inside from cold water in the hose cooling the material below the dew point so I would not regard a bit of damp a problem with the hose test. One has to be careful of the difference between leaks and condensation. Then there is the overall dampness in a rain storm. A lot of ways to get soggy. ;-)
