I was in Joann's and saw what they called polyester crush taffeta. Shiny and many colors available. It was about $11/yard. Is that good for a hammock? Anyone have any other taffeta they get online? It is time to make me a hammock

Sounds wicked pricey to me. Regular polyester taffeta is what I like. It is used for plain blouses and shirts. The crush stuff is for a higher fashion statement. As such it costs more. Tell them you want a plain "top weight" polyester taffeta and see what they show you.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

I tried what Rev suggested and they showed me satin taffeta. Too slippery for my taste. It was also steep at 9.99/yard. I'll have to check someplace else out.
Charlie, sign up at JoAnn's on line for there coupons. I get about 3 a month sent to my cell phone. Every little bit helps
I actually have their app which lets you get coupons all the time. I would have happily bought the taffeta if it was not satin.
Gack.... You need to find a shop where the clerks know their fabrics better. Satin and taffeta are both weaves. And they are different. Satin has more top thread showing. Eg. one under/three over. That's why is smooth and shiny. It is a very elegant fabric and IMO totally unsuited for the wilds where a hammock is often used. It can snag very easily.
Taffeta is a one over/one under weave. It is more textured and not as shiny. Taffeta is somewhat akin to an oxford cloth, but much much lighter.
There is a market for "Satin Taffeta" in the retail trade. I have no clue where it came from or how it got it's name. The merging of two weaves is a difficult thing to set up. See if you can find an independent fabric shop somewhere. They may be less inclined to follow the faddish trends.

There are two local shops a block or two away from me. I'll see what kind of fabrics they have. There is also a Michael's Craft store. I just wanna make some cheap hammocks for my buds.
If you can find a WalMart with fabrics just pick up the $1.50 - $2.00 /yd fabrics you like. Chances are it will be a nylon or polyester taffeta.
