Which Blackbird is right for me?

I have been a happy hammock camper for a year and a half now, and in that time, I have logged nearly 60 nights of hammock bliss. For the record all but two of those have been in a Grand Trunk Skeeter Beeter Pro; the lone two were in a friend's borrowed WBBB 1.0 Double, which I must admit, was incredible!

I am soon to move into a Blackbird, but I don't know which one. I am 6' 1" and am right at 200 lbs (never more, but sometimes less). Were the WBBB 1.0 still available, I would buy it without a second thought. The lay was great and though it took some getting used to the first night, the second was unquestionably the best I have ever had (and that is saying something!)

I am weight conscious, and my current hammock weights 28.5 oz (including whoopie slings, adjustible SRL and straps and toggles). I am looking at reducing this, even if by only a few ounces. And for the record, I am pleased enough with my whoopies/straps/toggles that I have no interest in considering any different system.

With all that, can anyone offer some advice on which of the WBBB versions might be best for me?

With you liking the 1.0 so much I would think the 1.1 dbl would be a lock for you in terms of choice. Similar weight and feel and available!

    Single vs Double

I guess one of my implied questions is what difference would I notice with a double vs a single layer? My Skeeter Beeter is a single layer hammock. I feel it is a different material that the BB (more of a parachute silk than a ripstop DWR), so I am guessing the BB would stretch less. Should I be considering a 1.7 single? I have both summer and winter quilts and do not use a pad in the hammock.

Well that's an age old question, double or single. Some people claim a single layer to be more prone to bugs biting through, but it's never happened to me. That being said, I prefer double layer hammocks just because of versatility. Even if I don't ever plan to use a pad, I still have the option there...and I love options! YMMV

I agree with Yukon in that I like my double layer. I am 5'9" around 190-200. I have the wbbb 1.7 dl. I could have gotten a sl. Something I thought of though was that I have more options with the dl. Not only that but the dl can hold a lot more weight should you ever want or need to loan it to friends or family that may weigh more than you or I. It's really a matter of personal preference. Good luck with your decision. HH.

I tend to prefer double layers just for the pad option , you can also hide things in there if you are in another country (seriously) . If weight concerns you go with the low number double and attach your own suspension to retain happiness , I use adjustable webbing and have noticed no weight but I am used to carrying alot more than the pack weights I have seen posted on HF , Semper FI!! A related question.

In a double layer, is the foot box doubled as well?

    I'm 6'1" 210, own a 1.1 double and love it.

I have not tried the 1.7 double so I can't speak on that one.

Also own a 1.7 single Traveler and dig it for bug-free hanging.

I like the feel of the 1.1 fabric a little better than the 1.7 fabric but they are both just a comfortable to hang in.
