Finally posting. Thank everyone for their tips and DIYs. My 8 yo(his b'day wish trip) and I left on a 2 day trip Easter Sunday to Big Hill Pond in TN. We ended up doing the full loop which is about +/-11 miles and staying at one of the shelters. Two lighter hammocks and other tips definetly made the trip easier.

Excellent B'day trip! A hammock and some time in the woods with my Pa when I was 8 would have been very memorable. Good Stuff!
