I made a prototype of something similar with the insulation just in the area I lay. The insulation is sewn to an under cover in the Garlington Taco style. Worked great but involved a lot of suspension lines. It also incorporates a top entry bug net sewn to the undercover. Some of our hike&hangs here in Florida have mild temps and bugs during the day and frost in the morning so bugnets are needed pretty much all the time.

i am currently working on my shoulder season down insulated hammock.
it takes some careful planning but i have most of the details worked out.
of course i will share pics when its completed.

An interesting idea, but I wonder if having zippers right on the edge of the hammock, a high contact area, might result in premature failure of the zipper or the cloth it is sewn to. I'm just thinking about how that zipper would feel slipping in and out of the hammock. If you folded the top edge of your hammock over a couple of inches to the outside, and ran a couple of seams paralell to the edge, you could attach the zipper along the side an inch or so from the top. That might protect the zipper and your legs from excessive abrasion.

Any thoughts about using a few snaps instead of zippers? I figure you could align them in such a way as to snug them up and avoid gaps yet then have the flexibility to use various quilts.

I used snaps on the prototype I made and found them to be a PITA. A little tension and they pop open and sewing them on was tedious. In thinking about this came up with another possible solution. While sewing the side hems of the hammock evenly space small loops on the outer edge. The UQ could be suspended from the loops with Quilt Hooks or even buttons. A second layer of UQ could be attached over the first with the same loops. Just an idea but may experiment with my next DIY Rig.
