I am going to Houston this weekend for a class and was planning on staying on the LST. Website said it was closed as well as many other areas due to dead trees. Is there a place near Houston to hang?

There are a couple of campsites at the Equestrian Primitive Area at Brazos Bend. There's a Trip Report here. There may be some at the main park as well. Arrive early. Caveats as to skeeters, chiggers, and poison ivy apply.
If you want to help re-open the trail, there's info here.
