    Ring design and features?

So far I've found 3 ring aluminum ring manufacturers:

    SMC
    Omega Pacific
    Petzl

Does anyone have any opinions on their designs?

The most important feature I'm looking for is a solid ring. It's not necessary, but it would be nice. The second feature I would prefer is smoothness. Smoother is more preferable to less smooth. For instance, I'd like to avoid a welded joint. Again, not a must, but preferable.

Is there any design characteristics of rings I should consider when it comes to hammock suspension?

If you have been using a set of rings for years without problems and you'd rave at the mention of the ring's name, please name check it and it's manufacturer.

    Thank you in advance.

I've never had one problem with my SMC rings. I'm not one to rave about gear, (I may rant and rave about many other things though) so I'd simply say the SMC rings fit the bill quite nicely.

I'm going to weigh in with exactly zero help: my unbranded steel rings that I bought at the local hardware store are still strong, unrusted, and trustworthy 4+ years later....

I've been using the smaller diameter SMC rings. At 11gm they're the lightest and I'm pretty sure at 14kn, which comes out to 3150lb, they'd be the last thing in my system to fail.

what are you useing them for? i have no experence useing them in pairs as a strap locks. i would think that you'd have to finish the starps with one or two half hitches to be assured that you wouldn't wake up on the ground.(maybe not) if as a drip ring, they'll all work, but for me i like saving weight any chance i get as long as they'll hold aprox 1100lbs- small smc's

I have no idea what you are talking about. Unfortunately, I don't know all of the terminology or technical lingo of climbing/outdoor/mountaineering hardware yet, or knots. Please bear with me.

I would be using this setup:

HH straps with a clasp (D-ring?) holding 2 rings. The rope would go through the 2 rings, loop around again, then go through/between the 2 rings. Then close off with a quick release knot.

I saw a video for the above technique and it seemed very clever to me. It didn't slip. I'd like to keep this discussion about rings, not set-up techniques. There are dozens of them to explore here. I'm not done reviewing other options. So far, I'm the most enthused about the above set-up because it seems fast, intuitive, and adjusts quickly if you don't get it right the first time.

I learned a new word today. This devise is referred to as a carabiner.

The SMC descending rings do NOT have a welded joint. They are very smooth and very light. They, like the others, are rated for climbing use.

I use SMC rings. They are smooth, light and climbing rated. No input on the other rings unfortunately.
