Are you sure the eyes aren't fiddler crabs? When i set up during the day, all those hundreds of holes had crabs come out at some time or the other. And yeah, me and my girlfriend learned about walking on the live roots the hard way. haha. We fell more than a couple times. great pics, by the way!

We had 80 plus hangers at Ocala National Forest this past January. At least once a month about a dozen more or less hangers plan a hike somewhere in Florida. Last month I joined a dozen others for a weekend hike and hang in the Withalacoochee State Forest and we covered about 14 miles if memory serves me. Now that it's summer, events taper off. But come fall, we will all leave our air conditioners behind and hit the trails.

Ive camped in mangroves before, but I cant say its my favorite place to camp. I never could get comfortable in the mangroves. I think they are very pretty from a distance though. Good luck and have fun out there.

The guardian bug net will get the job done for you, and its pretty tough and rugged, but the fiddle-factor is pretty high. It usually takes me quite a bit of messing around with it to get it right. I know its annoying to string up a seperate ridgeline just for your bugnet, but Ive found that the guardian net functions best when you do that.

The other problem I have with mine is that the ends get pulled open a little when I sit in the hammock and it pulls down on the suspension. Ive tied some t-shirts up around the opening and that seemed to keep the bugs from finding theyre way through.

it looks like a fun hang. i know very little about the conditions there. but to me it looks like bug heaven.i would think that spraying with permitherin would be a requirement in addition to a bug net.

Please be careful in those mangroves, they are biologically diverse and important linkages in the landscape and hubs for many species. Just the biologist in me

I have never heard of Permethrin, but I just looked it up and it could definitely come in handy.

some friends and i kayaked around 10k islands a few aprils ago. real fun stuff. my friends brought a tent while i lived the life above ground.

i will agree that those shining diamond eyes belong to wolf spiders and can be quite unnerving!
how do you get the forest ready for the party?
    ...you spruce it up!
