FWIW I think it is a combination of staying hydrated, something I try for all the time, and timing. If one is sitting around the campfire in the evening consuming beverages there is a predictable move several hours later as it trickles through the system. Have a quick drink and the way back and.....

I voted yes but I think it's more related to any outdoor activity I'm doing, not specifically hammock camping though.

If I am going to spend all day in the field at work, walking around the desert with body armor and a pack on, I'll drink a lot more before I head out and a lot more throughout the day.....and pee more often.

Same goes for mountain biking, trail runs, day hikes...etc.

Even pre-Guiness activities involve some preparatory hydration

I am thinking that my personal experience

is the result of a couple of factors:
    1. Back & kidney warmth. If I am the least bit cold, I will be up 2 or 3 times.
    2. Diuretics. If I drink straight water it seems to actually REDUCE the number of nocturnal relief trips. If I have been consuming bourbon, the number rises.

I sleep full time in the Hammock. I use the bathroom less then when I was in a bed over a year ago. Usually just a couple times a night. I really should take my pills in the morning thus saving a glass and a half of water at night.

In bed, I'd wake up constantly with sore shoulders or back or what have you and a trip to the bathroom was more of a reset then a relief though there was plenty of relieving. Most nights now I go to sleep at 10 I'm up at midnight to 1 and then I wake either at 2 or at 4:30 when I get up. Sometimes, if I spend a long time working out doors, I'll come in drink way too much water. I'll be up every hour most of the night then. Hydrate DURING the day not just wait till you're done. I KNOW when I've done this though I don't seem to be able to stop myself while doing it. I know because when I walk, I slosh. You can hear the water rocking back and forth.

    Wink

In October, I was sleeping in my hammock full time at home.
So that was October, November, December, January, February.

February 28 I started the AT and have slept nearly every night in my hammock (when not at a hostel or in a shelter in the Smokies).

I can attest to the hydration factor.
In fact, I am HIGHLY HIGHLY aware of the local temps, hiking limits (number of miles) and intake of water, and in town, intake of beer

I got me a ZLite to cut down on the 'cold kidney' factor.

For me, it is definitely hydration related.
If that factor changes even a little bit, it affects the night time trips to water the leaves.

It's all about hydration. When I'm not at the homestead, wether it is car camping, hiking, out with the Scouts, whatever, I am normally drinking water all day instead of soda or tea or whatever. And the H2O makes you go.

At home, I NEVER wake up to go. I usually sleep for about 8 hours. But I thought of this old thread while backpacking this past weekend.

The first night, I wasn't sleeping very well (no idea why). I got up and went around 2am just to get it out of the way.

The second night, I got up twice in the night and had to go right away when I finally got up for good.

This is very unusual for me and also remember going more often on all my previous hangs. I probably even drank a little less water than usual. Very strange!

It's already been said but I tend to drink more water when I camp so I do find myself peeing more.

At least once more than normal. Sometimes twice. I got one of those plastic hospital "urinals" but haven't tried it yet.
