North Carolina Hammock Hanging Camping Sites List

To help in planning places to go hammock camping in North Carolina I have started a Google spread sheet listing the NC state parks, National Forest ect that allow camping.

However not all these locations are "hammock" friendly. While I have camped at many of these locations over the years, I must admit it has been over 35 years since I have last visited some of the places so I do not know the latest conditions so I need help in completing the list.

If you have hammock camped at any of the places listed or have visited recently in the last year or two and know a place is or is not hammock friendly, please help fill in the list. If you know of a place not listed, then please add it.

It might be easier to keep track of the sites that do not allow it, as that would be the smaller number to keep track of. Just my .02

This sounds like a great idea as a fellow NC hammocker. But I wonder what constitutes a hammock-friendly campground?
I have camped at Jordan Lake, Falls Lake, Croatan, Raven Rock, and another site that I will need to look up. In all cases, I didn't ask if hammocks were okay, and no one told me to take it down. But in most cases, I don't think anyone actually saw me hang up my hammock. It's hard to label a place as "hammock friendly" just because no one saw me to tell me not to hang. I really love the idea of this spreadsheet, but I think it needs to be clear when a place is accepting of hammocks, and when someone has simply gotten away with it.

I define hammock friendly as any place that has a location suitable for hanging a hammock.

Hammocks Beach SP is not hammock friendly as there are no trees for hanging at the campsites.

I figured a list of parks ect would be usefull as many folks may not realize some of the places they could visit and hang at.

I think it's a great idea, although my concerns when hammock-camping are not only that there won't be suitable trees, but that the campground will not allow hammock camping. I wonder if another column for campsites that are confirmed to allow hammocks would be helpful. But then a lot of that may come down to who sees you. So far no one has ever told me to strike my hammock, but really there are only two places (Jordan Lake and some private campground at the Outer Banks) where a ranger/proprietor has actually seen my hammock, and at Jordan Lake, they didn't come by until I was striking camp, so I can't view their silence as permission. Might have just been a matter of, "Too late to worry about that now." Although I've heard of other folks hammock-camping at Jordan Lake in more well-traveled areas, so presumably they are okay with it.

In any case, it should be a great resource. I live around the corner from Umstead and have been meaning to check it out for hammocking options. Will update the spreadsheet when I do. The park is mostly woodlands, so it's hard to imagine not being able to hang there, but I've never seen the campgrounds.

I have camped at Jordan and Falls lake several times with my hammock. The rangers have seen me set up, and never asked me to take it down. I have also talked with the people at Eno river and they allow hammocks as well.

And usual you have to stay within the rules and regulations for each location. Some parks will let you setup a bit off site inside the trees, where as others can be quite stringent about staying on/over the tent pads.

    Great idea.

I just filled in Morrow Mt. (Yes) and added Portsmouth Island and Durant's Island

Added the Ironhorse Ranch for those motorcycle campers in the group. It's in heart of some of the finest roads in the South East.
