    Recommended Tarp Shopping List

I thought I'd add an update for anyone wanting to pick up the best accessories out there for a tarp, but especially for an UGLY tarp http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=51374

    1. 1 pair of Tarp Flyz ($15) http://www.outdoortrailgear.com/featured/dutch-flyz/

    2. 1 pair of Clip-on Tarp Pull Outs ($8.75) http://www.outdoortrailgear.com/feat...arp-pull-outs/

    3. 75' of Zing-it line ($5.50 per 25' would be $16.50) http://www.outdoortrailgear.com/featured/rope/

    4. 1 Pair of Mesh Tarp Sleeves ($25 shipped) http://www.outdoortrailgear.com/cott...orage-sleeves/

    5. 4 pair ($1.49 a pair) of mini line-loks. http://hammockforumsstore.webs.com/a...s/show/1473737

With shipping for the line-loks and Dutchware around $10 altogether that adds up to about $80. That may look like now your tarp is expensive, but most folks here upgrade to these materials anyway so the cost is a savings long term. Of course if you want to go inexpensive, you could use paracord and in place of COTPOs use a marble and shockcord. Not as quick to set-up, but its a matter of preference.

My recommend for stakes is 4 aluminum tri-stakes such as the $2.50 http://www.rei.com/product/682543/msr-ground-hog-stake and 4 Ti tent stakes http://gossamergear.com/shelters/she...stake-184.html at $2.50 each. The reason for the two types is it gives you extra versatility depending on your soil conditions. I find the Ground Hogs better for soft or sandy soil, and the Ti stakes better for hard clay or frozen ground. Recommend you always bring a couple backups.

If you want a seam in tyvek without sewing, use outdoor carpet tape.People have been using carpet tape to make tyvek and poly tarp boat sails for years. It can be had in narrower widths and from most big box home improvement stores.Wipe the area to be taped with a damp cloth to make sure there is no dust to keep the tape from sticking.

    packability

I know this thread is a little old but I was wondering how you pack your 9x12 tyvek tarp? While Tyvek doesn't weigh any more than good silnylon, it doesn't pack down as tight. On the other hand, it is more waterproof than the best silnylon. As a former groud dweller, my first tarp was a 9x12 sheet of Tyvek. I know of about 11 different ways to pitch a 9x12 tarp depending on the situation. I am new to hammock camping and living in Utah, there are many places our scouts go to camp that do not have suitable trees so having a tarp of Tyvek, that could double as a groudcloth, would be much more durable.

    Thanks!

BTW, if anyone is interested in my diagram of the different ways to pitch a 9x12 tarp, I could probably dig it up.
Keep it simple. The more crap you have and the more complicated it is, the more likely it is to break. Get back to basics man!

Have no fear, UGLY Tarp is here!

Hey Odie. I made a Tyvek tarp as well and you're right, it does not pack well. I used tarp skins with mine and just rolled it up the best I could.

This is the one I made-

I've seen sticky tabs on eBay that can be glued on as tie outs. A pack of 16 was 14.98 with free shipping.
Life looks better from a BIAS hammock.

What are the specs on your tarp? Dimensions? Weight? etc...
