Clip-On Tarp Pullouts (COTPO) with a WBBB.

    Hey all,

I found a great mod for using Dutch's COTPOs. I simply tie a loop of Zing-it onto the white plastic donut. I then attach a mitten hook to my WBBB shelf tie out and connect the two.

    Advantage 1: quick attachment.

Advantage 2: keeps line off the ground (no tripping)

Advantage 3: By putting your hand in the shelf and 'flapping' your blackbirds 'wing' you can shake your tarp to clear water/snow or scare off birds/squirrels/neighbors and other undesirables.

As the COTPO is staked on the other side of the tarp using shock cord, there is little or no risk of damage as far as I can see.

Used it on my amazing Ultralight, Gigantic, Low-cost, Yuser-friendly (UGLY) tarp (see UGLY tarp in DIY forum) this morning to do both and it worked great.

Oh yeah, the knots are ugly, but that's part of the charm (bad excuse for spending more time IN my hammock and tarp than working ON my hammock and tarp.

That looks like a good setup. I might just have to try that on my DIY WBBB tribute (actually I think it's more of a hack than tribute ) I am just now in the process of adding the tie outs. The only thing I can se is if you want to hang your tarp high you may run into issues but I think that would be a trial and error and you could always stake it to the ground.

    No problems with height yet.

Actually there was a fair bit of clearance already (I'm 5'6 and could almost stand up inside). I do see that if I wanted to lift it higher it might not be as effective, but in that event I would just not hook in.

I'm no rocket surgeon, the success here was more of a happy coincidence (it could just as easily have failed) I am just impressed with how cheap, easy, and functional this project turned out. Only problem so far is my tarp sleeves (from mountain goat) could be a little bigger or I might want to use a cinch sack to bring the bulk down a bit.

That is a pretty clever idea. This would be a great way not to have to carry two extra stakes for tie outs over the water.

This is great. I think you point toward a nice tweak: instead of the donut hole maybe two small holes to tie a loop of zing-it. Not only used for WBBB (as noted in that sub-forum), but for anyone as a place to hang a flash light or other small items or bags.

Hmmm, I wonder if these tarp pullouts can be used on hammock bodies....

    Great point!

I had thought along the same lines. My thought was a rubber piece shaped like a mushroom that you could sort of snap in. The size of the hole and the weight penalty made me rethink. But still, a way to add a simple hook or snap on a loop would be cool!

I see where this is going....Use the hole for snap on accessories! For example, a molded part so that people can do that mod that uses tent poles for tarp spreaders. Or a receiver for hiking poles for quick porch mod, or a camera mount, or a flash light that gets recharged by the shaking of the tarp.
