Welcome from Nashville. Jump right in, the water's fine. Just returned last evening from two days of kayaking and hanging with wife and fellow HFers at Santeetlah Lake in NC.
The Joann Fabrics right there in Cool Springs carries ripstop nylon. I've bought a bunch there with their standard 20% off coupon that comes in the mail, though I've not made a hammock with it, just other DIY stuff.
I'll second the suggestion to go to one of Neo's "hangs" at Meriwether Lewis National Monument & Campground on the Natchez Trace not too far from Franklin. You'll meet lots of nice folks and get to see a wide variety of hammock set-ups.

Welcome from another middle Tennessean.
I am with Spamburglar and Rain Man, Neo's hangs are a great source of information and gear ideas. The upcoming hang has a thread in the Trip Planning section currently.

Welcome! I too am from Franklin! I actually live out in Arrington now, but unless somebody is aware of the vineyard they usually go...WHERE???
Afoot and light-hearted, I take to the open road,
Healthy, free, the world before me,
The long brown path before me, leading wherever I choose.
Glad to know there are a lot Of hangers in mid TN. Welcome from Murfreesboro!
Welcome to the madness from Arkansas!
