    Material choices

I'm still considering my options for HG top and bottom quilts and have read a few posts where quilts have been made with M50. Other than weight, is there any benefit of M50 over 1.1? Is it more comfortable?

    Thanks in advance.

It's a little softer to the touch. Not a huge difference though. Biggest difference is the weight.

When using 1.1, strong winds can make your butt really cold. But, having a quilt made from M50 makes it so you do not need to bring an UQ protector. Also, it is lighter and feels better against your skin. Having an UQ made from M50 is awesome.

if SevenD is still an option for a TQ...i'd suggest that.
super 'buttery' and soft against the skin, more-so than M50.

my M50 was almost plasticy, but has since softened up.

Thanks for the replies, I hadn't thought about the M50 being more wind resistant. Have any of you guys bought M50 stuff from HG? Did you supply the fabric from Thru Hiker, or did Adam & Jenny source it?

Also, is there much difference with M90? Thru hiker do that in a taffeta which might be good for the inside of the TQ. (Rip - apologies if this is what you mean by 7d)

    Thanks again

I'm considering EightD for my linning at least. The weight is fair and the price is right. I may go with M50 for the outer shell, haven't decided yet.

M90 is a lil heavier & cheaper but essentially the same as M50.

    M90 & M50 are products of Thru-hiker
SevenD & EightD are products of TitaniumGoat

The products are all similar in performance from what I've read.

I have an UQ from Hammock gear made from M50 and it's really awesome. At the time I ordered mine, they had supplied it. However, I would e-mail or call them asking if they still had some left.

With M90, you aren't getting a huge weight savings. But, the M50 is only a 10th of an oz lighter per yard than cuben.

m90 and m50 are very different.

the m90 is softer and silkier... whereas the m50 feels closer to 1.1

These fabrics differ, too, physical properties of wind resistance and vapor transmission.

Hand feel is obvious, seductive. Who can quarrel with silk sheets (with or without your dream partner?) What does it have to do with suitability in the field? Most here are to young, even if in the right country, to remember actor Ricardo Montalban flacking for a car company whose car seats were made of "fine Corinthian leather.." I'll bet it was "soft and buttery", too.

Now there are some who like to feel it all, even alone, and they consume it. But for me? When the thinest washable, removable, cover for the top 12 inches of my quilts and bag is devised, one you barely know is there, I'm buying, because I'm down on grime -- and some fabrics are more resistant to it than others -- and I smell too well.

Advice for any fabric for a top quilt? Tell the maker you want drape, whatever he/ she does, the mix of fill, baffle height, and fabric such that it naturally falls about your body. A tailor knows, and so should a quilt maker.
