I personally seam seal everything ... dry bags..rain gear.. tarps...etc.. the Permatex® Flowable Silicone Windshield and Glass Sealer is the product of choice .. I use a needle to poke a hole in the tip .. with a steady hand it will flow into the seam channel with no mess at all .. in my experience .. leaks always come at the most inconvenient of times .. 3am when it's raining .. ever try to fix a leaking tarp in the rain..in the dark ?? This is one occasion where a ounce of prevention is a worth a pound of cure .....
I think I'll start keeping some pine needles in my ditty bag though just in case I miss a spot ..

I do have the Permatex in hand now but I haven't done this yet. Recently we had to caulk in the kitchen and it brought back memories of my last experience with silicone.
Is flowable silicone more liquid like than silicone caulk (thus "flowable")? The seam seals I have seen are thin and flat against the tarp. Literally, almost seamless... Are people using some kind of tool to spread, or squeegee if you will, the flowable silicone to get it really flat? Is my finger good enough?

I just bought a 1.5 oz tube at o'reilley's auto parts for $5.55. Wallyworld carries many permatex products, but they didn't have the "flowable silicone" type. I seam-sealed a 14-foot ridgeline tarp and my wife's car windshield, and still have about half of the product left.
