    DIY hammock fabric width

My wife is working on hemming my new hammock right now. The 1.5oz ripstop I ended up getting is 68 inches wide . I'm wondering if that is going to be too wide. The hammock I used last year is 53 wide and 91 long and I was having issues with some nasty shoulder squeeze. Oh, the new one should come out to be about 10ft long.

My thought at the moment is that I can downsize but it's hard to stretch it once I make a cut. Any thoughts on how length and width effect lay?

68"? Awesome! You might do the Stretch Side trick to manage the extra fabric, but I say KEEP IT!

I'll see how it hangs and keep that in mind.

Turns out it's a little easier said than done to keep everything lined up and even while hemming that much fabric. Glad my wife is kind enough to deal with it

I've made hammocks 67" wide and they lay just fine.

From a gram-weenie perspective, I'm still trying to figure out if the extra width adds enough comfort to justify the weight.

I would keep it. You can always cut it down later. Very easily if it's just a hammock without a bug net attached.

My ENO DN is probably my most comfortable hammock, so my wife uses that one. It's 80" wide or so. The only downside is all the extra fabric gets a little floppy in strong winds.

I typically make mine 10' long by fabric width, which is usually around 62"-65" before the hems.

From a weight standpoint, your only talking about adding 3/4 sq yard of extra fabric at 10' length, (vs. 60" fabric) so about 1 ounce.

FWIW...I've made hammocks from 54" to 67" and notice little difference in the diagonal lay and comfort given equal lengths.

My experience is that longer lengths = flatter lay....wider body = greater ablility to keep things in the hammock. YMMV

The jury is still out for me, but at this point, I think gmcttr is on to something. I too have hammocks from 54"-67" in width and they all can be comfortable. But these hammocks are very different in other ways that can affect the comfort. I'm going to try to make 2 or 3 hammocks this summer that are identical in every way except width. It will be awhile but I will definitely file a report.

Any word on this report? I'm a newbie to hammocking and am very curious about the width comparisons!
