When I DIY my hammock I will add the ridge line Abe probably make it and easily detachable one.
This is a fear of mine as well. I have the ENO DryFly and although it is built like a tank, I feel the coverage is lacking. I've not had it in the rain yet but I'm definitely bringing a larger back up tarp if the great deluge hits.

To tie the tarp to the tree, I just tie a s-biner on the end of each piece of the ridgeline (the eno tarps have the little black tabs that take the place of tensioning knots). this alows me to simply wrap it around the tree and clip it back on its self. Makes set up/ take down easier, and uses less line than tieing a knot.
