Another choice is to get 2x4's and rip them in half. Most of the lumberyards will have quality, clean and clear of knots 2x4's even if you cannot find clean and clear 2x2's.

Just buy 3 2x4's and rip. Now you have your 6 legs. GET TO WORK and keep your spot, OldMart.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

    Lightning??

How many hang in this stand in lightning and heavy storms? Just curious, but I have 2 of the 4' Army Surplus bar slide togethers, lashed in tripod form, with the tripods using their fiberglass, but the horizontal 16' bars that me and wife hang off are aluminum. And just curious as to how many have hung during a sevear lightning and thunder storm?

As I was getting out of my ENO while pulling on the hammock to sit up and swing my legs over, one of the legs snapped at the knot and down I went. Not fun. And of course I had just convinced my wife that it would be fine to hang inside. Big gouge in the wall and several gouges in the hardwood floor. Be careful of the 2x2s quality. I had to search for a long time to find six that weren't warped and didn't have a lot of knots. Guess I missed one.
Nope, just replace the legs with good clear lumber. Hope it wasn't too painful.

Hurt my pride, hip, and knot on head from top rail crashing me. Nothing serious. I was sitting up in the ENO when all came crashing down.

Lurking Newbie working on PVC TDS

I finally read through all of this thread. I started my construction before reading it all, and would likely do some stuff different (like just buying the aluminum tubes).

My intent is portable (as in "fits in the trunk"), so I've attempting this with 1.25" PVC pipe sections, which join together with hardwood dowel sections.

I'll post pictures once I finish (hopefully I can be #200). Last remaining piece is the ridgepole. I have a couple of hammocks (Hennessey Scout for the son, Hennessey ASym for me, an Eno the son has, and 2 Yukon Outfitters from www.woot.com) The Yukons are really long. I tried a 12' ridge pole made of 1" steel pipe sections and connectors. That failed, but I lived to tell about it.

Looking for chain link fence top rail sections in the land of yuppies is proving difficult!

Shouldn't be. Home Depot and other lumber/home supply stores will have them as well as chain link fence suppliers. Should be many of both in Raleigh, NC.

Be careful with joined 1.25" PVC.

I like Raleigh...I wouldn't call it the "land of yuppies" though. Of course the last time I was there was back in 2003ish. A lot could have changed in 10 years.
