Great tip! I'll have to give this a shot next set I build. I have a good relationship with our local lumber yard, they're just not open at convenient hours to my work schedule.
As for pictures of the double-stack, I'll be setting it up tomorrow at the camp-out and will be sure to get some pictures of it all, loaded, without the tarp set up.
Ok, 45 pages to this thread so I'm going to be lazy and ask.
When using rope for the spreader, what knot are you using to join it. Giant Amsteel loops?
Sorry and thanks!
I did a continuous loop using hollow-braided polypropylene rope from Home Depot. It splices the same way that amsteel does. If you want to do a knot, I would personally recommend the grapevine knot for that particular purpose. I hope that helps.

- Nonsense. You only say that because no one ever has.

I made a TD mini-hammock stand for my surrogate grandson to go along with the hammock I made. The tripods are 5 ft tall and the ridgepole is 5 ft long. He is only 2, so I told his parents to just use it for toys until he gets a bit bigger, but I want him to get used to being around hammocks. I will prolly make a few other hammocks for him as he gets bigger and more coordinated. I will post pics as soon as his dad sends them to me.
If you don't experiment, you don't learn!
I came to this forum because of an Internet search, looking for info on a portable hammock stand, mostly to be used when camping from my truck or a pirogue or Glades Skiff, in areas that either aren't "hammock friendly" or that suffer from a lack of suitable trees.
I've read this entire thread, and the Turtle Lady's thread, and just about went into information overload. But I was able to decide on a TD stand and will build it next week. I'll launch my Glades Skiff tomorrow, and I work over the weekend, so next Tuesday is the TD build.
I'm wondering if anyone has any measurements for a wider base, since mine will be used for camping? Just thinking about uneven ground. But I do want to make one with the angle cut legs, so I can avoid using the stopper line around the base of the tripods.
I'll be hanging a HH Expedition Asym, with the standard fly for now, but my next project will be to build a Black Cat Tarp (but coyote brown instead of black,) with a 12 ft. ridge. I've already collected all the materials for the tarp. So I'm guessing a 14' ridge pole would be best for the new tarp.
Any thoughts on the above, I'd love to hear!
The only thing that may be different about my TD is feet. I mean, it will have them. Just in case of soft ground, I plan on cutting out a 6" or 8" diameter plywood disk for each tripod leg. I'll add a simple bracket for the leg to sit in, nothing fancy, just something to keep the leg from sliding off the disk.
I'm looking forward to trying this out.

FlaMike, unless you plan on staking down those feet, you may still want to consider the spread limiters no matter how wide you plan on going. It's a good precaution that doesn't get in the way.
There will be quite a few TDS's at the 4th Annual Florida Hang in January. It's on MLK weekend so put in for it now at work to get the time off
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you
houston, we have a problem, the S hook i have will not fit in the hole of the hinge and i can not find a 5/16 eybolt only a 3/8
oh when i enlarged the hole, the back leg of one of the stand will not lay correctly since the S hool will not hang down straight....
