I agree with this. I think the notion of a latch is okay, but I didn't mean I'd recommend this type. Thin and flimsy.

    I haven't found one I'd trust yet...

If it was a good hinge with strong mounting bolts, placed on the outside so it held the majority of the force, conceptually it should work. This would sure make transporting without a pickup truck a little easier!

So, one side has a hinge...

The other has something like this...

I sure do like this. Having a dinky convertible = absolutely no trunk space. It would be nice for someone to come up with something that brakes down more. Yet, I don't think I'm the one to test this out either. I've been totally indecisive on stands, and have so many book marked it's pathetic. Just awaiting the perfect one.

This is pretty neat! I just cemented two 4x4 posts into my back yard so I can hang instead of doing the yard work.

I ordered a set of these in aluminum to try today. The shipping costs are terrible! I've been thinking about them for a while and will probably just lash them together turtlelady style.
Yeah, I won't be using those. Just the best pic i could track down quickly. They're made for guitar cases. Found some others online rated for 450lbs.

Let us know how that other stuff works out. Looks interesting.

Have not started working on THIS project yet, but I am anxious to try it.
This company sells aluminum tubing that telescopes, in 3 and 6 foot lengths.
Surely something they have will work, and the shipping is relatively cheap!
Just get some 3 foot sections like what you need and slide them together. Drill hole for pin.

Unfortunately, I have no idea what size to get .

Just a thought, use two identical hinges, with a removeable pin. Put a hinge on each side of the leg, bolted through the leg so that one set of bolts fastens both hinges. Put the two sections of leg together , add hinge pins, and it just might be strong enough to actually work.

I will probably build one of these stands, although godknows, I don't need any more stands.

I was at Lowe's this morning, looking at fence rails and fittings...I can tell you this: This big boy will not be hanging from a pair of those pot metal rail end fittings.

I'm a little concerned with the 0.058" wall thickness (just under 1/16"). Not sure that this is a problem, but it was part of my reasoning to select the 2" diameter range.

    DXE-AT1505 Aluminum Tubing 3' x 1.875" x 0.058" wall, 6063-T832 drawn, no slits Ship Tomorrow $ 7.65 x 6 = $45.90

    DXE-AT1506 Aluminum Tubing 3' x 2.000" x 0.058" wall, 6063-T832 drawn, no slits Ship Tomorrow $ 8.45 x 6 = $50.70

    45.90 + $50.70 = $96.60 + $14.44 (shipping) = $111.04

I had the same inclination Dave but they seem to be holding up fine. My only concern is that I won't see any warning stress, the thing will just snap if it's going to.

OTOH, I've been using it for 8-9 months and have not seen any sign of weakness. I did shoot a screw through to attach it to the pole.

Let us know if you come up with a better end cap attachment!
