That chain repair link is a great idea.
Very nice! I like it.

I'm looking to build a TD stand. Need some advice. I've got a 11ft thunderbird. How long should the top rail be? What's the average spacing of the legs? Is one of the legs shorter? Thanks for any help. I've been shifting through the posts but holy cow there is a lot of posts.

The 11ft long hammock has a 110" ridgeline, so one 10 foot top rail would work for you. (I use one 10 foot or 120" top rail with my 11 1/2 foot gathered end).
My spacing is about 32" on one tri-pod and 36" on the other - so 30" to 36" would be a decent range (same size legs, different spans to fit my deck - an exact span is not required).
If you are under 200 lbs, I like hppyfngy's method/directions (see the link to 'TDStand Instructions' at the bottom of his post 2005)

I forgot to mention that if you plan to use a tarp with your TD you need to measure your tarp length and add a foot (for about 6" on each side) to determine your top rail length. (I don't use a tarp with my stand, thus my use of a 10 foot top rail)

Thanks again for the info. I put one together tonight. It's a little rough but I worked out the kinks for the next one. I started with a 13' top rail, threw up my thunderbird and just started notching it down until it was right. I ended up with about a 11' 4" top rail. I use a superfly so I'll have to test that. Anyway, it was a quick project but with your help and happy fun guys instructions I was able to put it together. Thanks again.
