I'm going to be making myself one in the next week or so. Plenty of 2x4's that my roommate has that we will use to make it. Got the hinges yesterday but we're not sure what to use in place of a fence-pole. Roomie thinks another 2x4 should work (he is a bit of a handyman) but I am not convinced. The nearest Home Depot etc is probably 2 hours or so away (and I don't have a car) - so what are some alternative materials I could use that a place lice ACE Hardware Store may have?

If you have a saw, you could rip the 2x4 to 2x2 for uprights then glue lam off set lengths of the trim for a beefy ridge.

I think that may be what the plan is, though I am not sure how we'd attached the wood 'pole' to the stand.

If you don't want to go the strap hinge route, you could simply lash. All the horizontal compression is on the ends of the ridge pole. The ridge pole is just vertical weight on the stand. One simple way to support the ridge pole is to leave enough length on the uprights above the join so they form a V to hold the ridge pole. Or you could suspend the ridge pole by the join. Lotsa options.

Has anyone put a screw on the bottom of each leg to anchor it in place (stop it from slipping) or is the rope connected to each leg the preferred method? I was thinking of uneven ground. Another idea may be connecting the rope to the legs and ending on a adjustable taut line hitch to vary the length of the rope and allow the legs to spread further. any thoughts?

I have Taut-lines for my leg tie outs. For the most part they don't need much adjusting after set but it's useful. I thought about your screw/stake idea, but that limits the TDS to outside use and brings the hope that rocky terrain won't ever be a nuisance. If you like that idea, though, you could try an appropriate-sized hole near each end/foot area, with a stake driven through it and into the ground after setup. I don't know how this would affect the integrity... The plain wood bottom works fine for me outdoors and tennis-ball caps for the feet are used when I bring it inside and put it on carpet. Little yoga mat squares go under the tennis balls if they're on a slippery surface.

Anything wrong with just using heavy duty sawhorse bracket hardware?

    Need to make legs longer...

I guess it would make it more a swingset type hammock stand though...

Maybe a slip-over or thread-on leg extension for uneven ground.

orange brackets shown from Home Depot, lists as $59 for the pair from the local website for them...... versus maybe $50 or less for the complete assembly using 2x2s and fence poles and hinges?
