Problem solved and simple fix to the "tippiness". Apparently I had an oops when measuring the back triangle. The distance to the from the back leg to the front was 3 Inches shorter than front leg to front leg. Sanded an 1/8 inch on the angle to change it and it leaned quite a bit farther back creating a nice triangle with all equal distances. What a difference that made! Figured I would share my oops incase it happens to anyone else.

This might have been already mentioned but; this thread might be a good candidate for a Sticky.

I have now. Some day I'll work on getting it under a 12' ridgepole. I used about 13' of pole for these pics.

    what's the min ridgepole length?

I'm keen to build one of these!

My PU truckbox is only 5.5' long (and putting it in crossways won't work this time).

Most people that i've read have 6 - 6.5' 2x2s with varying spread...so i'm thingking that a narrow stance with 5.5' legs will be ok...
    Comments on that?

    Another issue is the ridgepole.
With a 5.5' box, i'm probably limited to 2 5.5' pieces of pole for a total of 11' (with outside tube sleeve) or 10.5' pole (narrow tube end inserted into the wider tube end).
Is 10.5' or 11' going to be too short?
Or should I try using 3 pieces to get a pole with a longer total length. 14'-16'?
    Comments on that one?

    Thanks for any help!

I don't think you should have a problem (just test it carefully). You will just need to adjust things accordingly. For instance, instead of having a longer loop hanging down to attach to your pole use the shortest possible loop so that you can get your cross pole as high as possible. Also, I would go with 3 pieces for the pole and shave it down from there. It's easier to be too long and shorten than to... biggin' it after the fact You might also need to hang your hammock a bit lower than you might prefer but as long as it is off the ground all night and you have enough clearance for your UQ then you are golden.

I'm going to try a new mod to the TurtleDog stand and will report back later this week or this weekend. I'm going to try to lay the pole on top of the tripod. That will give you two things. First, it will get the pole as high as possible so that you can shorten the tripod legs as much as you want. Second, it will get your tripod out of the equation when you are trying to put a tarp on this rig. I don't know if it will work... but I'm going to try!

    Thanks Dave.

    some good points there.

I didn't even think about the loops yet.

And I agree that 3 is easier to tweek than two ridge pieces.

Looking forward to this 'top mount' pole idea you have.

    Good luck!

5.5' is probably do-able, but on the short side. You will be close to the ground.

10' will work for the ridgepole.

You should be able to haul things 10-12' long in a pinch. Drop the tailgate and gain ~20". Put the long item in, tie it off so it can't slide out and toss some weight on it close to the cab so that end doesn't bounce around. Put a red warning flag on the end. The lumber yard will have them. Drive carefully and watch your turns...that long end will swing out into the next lane. (Edit...this info is for getting the materials home. Not for normal hauling to the campgrounds.)

The local military supply has these for $7.50 per section. I think 12 would do it. That is $90 plus tax. What do you think of that price?

If you need a stand and want to avoid carying anything except cord then this can work.
