I realized I never posted here - I built a version of this stand out of all pipe that worked really well. I've used 8' pieces for the tripod (I think - it may have been 7.5') and used three 5' for pieces for a 15' ridgeline for my WBBBXLC. I get a pretty gnarly calf ridge with it, so I've not used it much. I may be looking at a different hammock soon, so I may be pulling it back out then.
I'll try to post some pics when I get home.

My stand hit the road for the Mud Caves trek with Troop 777 from Encinitas. I never deployed the tarp. The wind did take it over when empty, but it was solid when I was in it. Much more solid than the turtlelady (?) Stand I made previously.
2x2s, hinges, shackles and hardware from Lowes
BTW...will bring to the SoCal hang!

I don't know what I did wrong but I finally put together a Turtle Dog stand and it's not stable at all. Looks just like others that I see photos of and I got all the parts right off one of the parts lists on this forum. Looks great until I try to get into the hammock. The stands pull inward. I don't know why. The pole hands straight down from the hinge on the tripods and the hammock is attached to the ends of the pole. The tripods each have a 3 foot spread.
How is your pole attached to the tripods, and what are you using for that? If you're using rope of some sort, tie the rope to the pole with a prussik knot. The more wraps, the better. I've seen a lot of people try using a girth hitch or larks head, and that doesn't hold tight enough. Girth hitch or larks head would be a cause of the tripods moving inward once weight is in the hammock.
