Just don't think we could get much more stable that the gate hinge for the tripods. I mean, eventually, things have to hit a point where they just can't get any better than they are. I literally read hundreds, probably 250-300 pages yesterday full of different ideas. Many things still need a lot of refinement, but I'd say THESE tripods are about perfect. All the guess work is done and the method is tried and true. Choosing this design to follow was a no brainer based on everything I read.
I would love to see more ideas/pictures for simple suspension and things so I can start to tweak/perfect mine. I know at least 72 people have built one of these, but I didn't see pics of 72 stands.
    I need more pics!!!
    Please?
    Just kidding you.

I think it's pretty perfect too but we're all still on the search for lighter and more compact. All innovations welcome!

I must like 'em, I keep making them.

I came across an interesting joint set up for a tripod on a DIY tripod stool website. I was thinking it would work well here instead of lashing, which could slip on slippery poles.

Basically its bolting two poles together with an Eyebolt sandwiched in between which then is bolted to the third pole. The poles are free to swivel outward

My question is: What size bolt would one recommend to handle the shear forces downward?

Also suggestions for how to attach the crossbeam suspension?
I am doing a significant modification to the turtledog stand idea, and thought I had completely settled on my attachment technique, but this may change my mind. This will use significantly less hardware than I am currently using, and might fit my needs quite well. Thanks for sharing this idea - I can't wait to get home and play with it!

While I appreciate the sturdy nature of the Turtle Dog stand. As I have mentioned in other threads, I am looking for a light weight option for scout events. I have a 10 year old who I know is not up for the task of carrying six 2x2x6's and a 10 foot fence rail. I'm looking at alternatives. Such as pvc or wood dowels for the legs. I already know a 2 piece 1" pvc tube with a 1" dowel insert will work for the horizontal pole for him, not my 225# self. Tested that this weekend sunspended from the screen porch rafters. (great night sleep by the way.)

Plan on building one in the near future. Just wondering if anyone has had one blow over when hammock is empty on a windy day?

Yes. Nothing dramatic happened though. I didn't have a tarp on it, just a hammock. It filled up like a sail and the whole thing just toppled over.

I usually don't leave the hammock on it for that reason.

Others have said that leaving the tarp on and tied down anchors it well enough. Depends on the wind...

Very interesting idea. I think it would work, but there is only one way to find out.
I am using 5/16 bolts on my stand, and that should work for this idea. You would have to drill the holes bigger to allow the legs to move/swing out, or at least the two that are on the long bolt. With the hinge, the bolts are fairly tight and this compressive force would add strength to keep the legs from splitting. I don't know if you would have problem or not. After thinking about it, you may need a bigger I bolt, because I think you would probably hanging your suspension for the ridgepole from it.

Yes, I posted the results earlier, but basically my hinges were not made with that heavy of steel, and they twisted a little. I was able to straighten them, but bought a thicker hinge and replaced them. The ones I found that were a lot better came from Ace Hardware, were the originals came from Lowes.
I have 2 long Amsteel dog bones that I can anchor it down with. But with a tarp, it does a good job holding the stand in place.

Finished mine a few weeks ago. Really like it with the 12' ridge pole. Still need to sand and stain. Thanks for all of the great ideas. I will get the pictures up when I get the tripods stained.

As long as it will take for me to find time to build a stand, I should probably just plant some trees in my yard.
