Having a colossally crappy day? Want to get away from it all, but can't?

Try DIY Therapy... Yes, I've had a lousy day... it happens... but thanks to this thread, I'm 60% complete with my TDS, and the day don't look so bad...

All my local home-depot had was rough-cut 2x2's , so I broke out my grandfather's Craftsman belt sander and went to town. (with ear plugs, of course!)

Boards are cut, Drilled, and a coat of Thompson's is next... ETA to functional TDS: 24 hours. (unless, of course, I eat too much candy!)

Another addition to he turtles of family

Add another stand to the list! Built mine today for a total cost of 50 bucks.

Here are some lessons I learned for all of you who haven't made one yet:
Don't skimp on the rope. I got some diamond braid that I figured I could loop. Maybe so, but you will need a lot more than you planned for if you are going to use the prussic knot.

If using 2x2's try to pick them out of a stack that is bundled together. I found the ones in the middle of the bundle to be much straighter.

Overall it was a pretty easy build. I think I will modify it just a bit in the future. I want to add something that will make connecting the crossbar to the tripods a little easier. I'll probably look at some sort of carabiner next time I'm at rei. I still need to play with how far I spread the legs out. It's still pretty shaky when I get in it.

Welcome to the club! This is a wonderful stand, easy to make, very sound (I use mine every night in the house and sometimes take it outside to hang in the middle of the yard and look at the stars). You'll enjoy it... remember, pics or it didn't happen

Put me down for another one. I finished my second pair tonight. Unfortunately I ran out of daylight so I'll have to wait until Thur to test it.

Finished my stand! I used 6.5' 2x2's and an uncut fence pole. Its a little more unstable than I would like. Any suggestions?

for some reason the dropbox pics aren't showing, i promise they are there!

Really? After all my DIY pics of crummy sewing you doubt my carpentry?

Have work to do tonight, but I'll post pics soon... Oh, and I used Mule Tape prussik loops to hang the top rail and hang the hammock to the stand!

Of course, I haven't tied anything in place to keep the legs from splaying... Yet. . .

You most likely need a wider stance with the tripods
