Finally built a stand and tested it out last night in Joshua Tree National Park. Set up was a little bit of a pain with the rocks everywhere and doing it in the dark, but it worked great once up. Temps got down to 25 degrees (around 16 with windchill) though and I had been too lazy to set up my tarp...brrrrrrrrrrrr! Thanks to hppyfngy for putting up with all my questions about the build!

Well catalyst, I think you win the best photo of a stand contest.

    Congratulations!

Thanks all! I was actually hoping to get a bunch of star pictures that night. Unfortunately, the weather didn't cooperate much.

    WOW nice photo...

Wonder how, this stand will hold up to Winds hitting from the sides?. Might have to add Outrigger lines? to keep from tipping over in good breeze.

I'd like to point out that this stand was originally designed to be portable and have a relatively small footprint pretty much above all else.

I have spent nights in mine when it was pretty windy, but it's not the Rock of Gibraltar by any means. If you don't have a relatively flat and level surface, or if you get the thing swinging or compromise it in any way like that, it can easily come down and with all that hardware it might not be pretty.

I had in mind to make the footprint small because of using it indoors and wanting to take up as little space in the room as possible. It could be that in the field, a wider stance than this design would be better. Sumo Wrestler style. But even then, it's still not what you call a solid structure, being held together mostly by gravity and the weight of the occupant.

If you want a stand for every situation and terrain, I don't think this is it; at least in the very upright tripod style I've made.
Maybe there should be an effort to make one that's more versatile.
In the meantime, take care with these things. I've never had one fall while loaded, but had them blow down when not loaded and a sudden wind can turn this thing into a very dangerous kite!

HYOH but mind the top rail crashing down on you. In particular, take care when loading and unloading. That's when the stand is most apt to do something weird. I wouldn't somersault into it Shug style...

I'm taking my stand to Mt. Rogers for the raffle. I think I'll attach the following EULA: "I have read HPPYFNGY's post."

    Good idea David.

Might add: "User assumes all risk of contusions, lacerations, impalement or other boo boos."

    I'd get a signature.
