here is one of the I beams. They were built with some scraps my dad had laying around. So they aren't quite long enough or even but they work.

The 'walking problem' comes from pushing back or pulling forward on the hammock as you get in and out. With a little practice you should be able to get in and out without moving the legs.
For those that have built one of these, how much did all the materials cost? (Assuming I have all the tools)

I love my set that i built thanks to the idea from here. I actually stained them and rubberized the feet on them for some weather resistance.
Go to Agfadoc's 2-23-2013 thread on page 16 of this forum regarding military aluminum. East to make turtledog type stand using sections that break down to 4 foot length for easy transport.
Greetings from Southern Louisiana!
I have no trees in my yard, so I was very happy to find this thread. My stand was functionally completed last night. To be able to enjoy a hang at home now is such an awesome feeling! I'm already looking forward to the next church or scout activity so I can bring this setup... its guaranteed to get people talking and generate interest!
My wife bought us all Grand Trunk Skeeter Beaters a few years ago for Christmas. Since finding the forum and learning about proper suspension, I've replaced all the stock stuff (heavier line and steel carabiners) on the Grand Trunks with the good stuff. I used the steel carabiners and line to connect the pole to the stand and then some of that heavy line prusik'ed on to the pole to connect the hammock suspension. I think I spent just north of $50 on materials.
The first test hang was with a Grand Trunk Ultralight and a 2QZQ UQP (I wanted to see how it helped with the chill on the hammock... I was pleased and also really like the color!). I stayed in it for about two hours last night once I added the Thermarest and sleeping bag for a top quilt... it was only 48*F. There was plenty of wiggling around with no slippage of any of the lines... so far so good! I sent a text to my wife to come out and take a picture. She was impressed. I was too lazy to pitch one of the blue tarps so I didn't actually sleep in it, but I plan on it tonight.

Still to do:
- Cut down the pipe to transportable lengths
- Add line to the legs to set the spread distance
- I like the idea of staining the wood with some color
- Figure out this whole structural ridge line thing (as you can see I had to tie it up out of the way)
- Generally fiddle with it and see how else it can be tweaked, and/or just make another, and another, and another...
Thanks for letting me mooch all of your great ideas... I look forward to mooching many more!

I just finished making two more sets, one each for the wife and kid. Can't wait to do a family hang!
They sure are handy to have. I love the innovation on this forum.
Keep movin', keep believing and enjoy the journey!
