Don't mean to sound like you shouldn't use them if you like them, but there are cheaper options to be found.
That's true. But I still am not sure if it's reasonable to be doing tripod lashing with 2x3s as opposed to the 2x2s or round poles.... gate hinges and bolts probably would raise costs somewhat, but you are right, probably not as much as 6 x $17 parts...hmmm some thinking to do. would be nice if I could find $2 apiece 2-3" round diameter poles greater than 5 feet...

Find a nice stand of bamboo somewhere and get pieces at least 2" in diameter.

And you'll have a TurtleLady Stand!

I used the round poles. Yes more expensive, but in my opinion more aesthetically pleasing. I used the eyebolt method of connecting the poles, but lashing works too. I also just used 6' poles at 1.25" diameter, which were $1.50 a foot. Worked fine with a 10.5' ridge pole. My son's uses 5'x1" broom handles. Works fine for his <100# weight.

I have made two sets of the turtledog stands, but instead of hardware, I used 550 cord simply because I have way too much of it. The only concerns I have are the single strand loops I made for the crossbar to rest in and a separate set of loops on the ends for the hammock to connect to.

For the first leisure hang they seemed fine, but I was wondering how they would hold up for an overnighter. I am 230 lbs and was wondering if anyone has had issues with 550 cord giving out?

I've used it for over a year now - many nights/naps. I'm 160lbs. My intent was get started using the 550 just because I had it, then change over to Amsteel loops when I made some. It's still my plan; maybe some day I'll get around to it.
I used the fisherman's knot to form the loop in 550 - knots reduce cord working strength. I think you'll be OK but hang close to the ground just in case.
You could always double up - make another loop over the ridge pole for safety sake.

    Hi

I would've thought you'd be fine using 550 to hang from......personally, I'd do a double loop just to make sure.....I mean, you never know when the dogs gonna try and join you!!!!
