Made a Test Tri-pod to hang with. Using 3/4" Conduit, with Rebar top bracket & D-rings.
I know it will fail, BUT... had to try. IN the past it held up a Antelope, but that was more straight down pressure Vs shear load.
Camped this week-end up on Ridge line, made Post from slash pile. Tri-pod on other side, Rigged up tarp. WINDY! Rain, Not fun.
Hung Hammock. Gave a push held.. Cool. Went to sit inside to hang felt it slowly sinking.. Just as I looked OH OH.... Least, it was a Slow bend.. not a Sharp Whack
thump.. Back to Rig to sleep the night. drats.
Conduit makes great Tent stakes cheap.
Sch40 Black pipe might work better.. Fun to play and hang.
No progress is made without trial & error!

Trying to understand what you're trying to achieve here but my thought was to slant the tops of the poles away from the hammock to redistribute the load from tension on the guy line to a compression load on the poles. Would need a way to keep the poles ends from driving into the soil, possibly something resembling the function of a hiking pole basket. I'm still betting on electrical conduit being sufficient if sloped properly.

Chug did you have a pole running from the tripod to the post? I cant see one in the pic. If there was not one then that would explain the failure. If there is then I would just say that 3/4 in conduit is not strong enough. I am hoping that there was no pole between the tripod and pole because that would mean that the failure was not due to the conduit.

It was something to try, as a test. IT was expected to fail, so no harm in my pride.
The pole in the middle is longer then the outside legs' Would have to find those numbers. Plan was to have the middle leg extend under hammock To keep the 6 foot height. It worked. Till IT bent in the middle and DONE.
Shear force was 142.9 LBS.. from the Hammock Calc. :-)
No Ridge pole. Just 550 cord to hold tarp up, with Pursiks tensions. With the top secured with 550 cord to stakes, to prevent tip over OR slipping.
Conduit will be strong in downward force.. But add side way's pressure will fail. just too thin of a wall.
Rev. B shall be better. :-)
Going to Try again, but use black pipe, with End caps with a sharpened bolt protruding out. To act as a anchor, plus to act like a Ski Pole Daisy cup.
I'm working with Turtle Lady to draw up and illustrate plans for the Turtle Lady and TurtleDog stand variants. There are lots of little mods that I've seen and I want to make the best of them in the illustration.
If you've created a stand, I'd love to see some photos, especially close-up shots of any specific hardware and building techniques. The illustration will have a materials list and hopefully be helpful to anyone looking to build the stand in the future.
