Does anyone else have a problem with stability? When I'm positioning the top rail the tripods tend to collapse on me. When I'm in the hammock and my weight is pulling the stands down they're fine. I tried putting a tarp on this afternoon and one side fell down on me so many times I gave up.

I'm thinking maybe my legs are too vertical and I need to widen the base.

I am always a bit surprised at how narrow most people make their bases on these. I made some tripods with 8 foot legs and I keep the bases pretty dang wide. They feel rock stable, weighted or not.

Jax, just took a look at your pics. Could the angle on the back leg be a little steep? Possibly a bit of sanding or planeing of the upper tip of the back leg would allow it to spread more. Can't really see the angle of the side legs but they should be able to be adjusted the same way. Maybe hpyfngy will give his opinion since he was the first to utilize the angled tops. On initial set up my can be somewhat wobbly before getting all of the legs spread and positioned. Also if the suspension between the hinge shackle or attachment down to the toprail isn't plumb it will will want to pull the opposite end over.

That's what I'm thinking, olddog. I actually used hpyfngy's angles but I'm handyman challenged. I may have screwed it up.

I tried using it last night but since I couldn't figure out how to get the tarp up w/o them falling over the light from the full moon eventually drove me back inside. I was pretty impressed with the loaded stability. I was flipping around, tossing and turning, etc and never felt like it was going to collapse. No matter how I moved it stayed put.

There is absolutely zero horizontal pull on the tripods with the hammock suspended correctly. Add a tarp, and there is nothing but horizontal pull. It's physics, my dear Watson

To rig a tarp successfully, a line from the top of the tripod to a ground stake must be added. The stake (a beefy one) should be in line with the hammock. That line will counteract the horizontal force of the tarp tension.

They never offered physics in podunk S TX. However, I was actually going to do that but I was feeling lazy. I guess we see where that got me.

So here's my theory of logic. When I played with it this morning I realized that the back leg is moving in when I adjust the rail. This is that's causing it to collapse. Now I suppose adding the staked line will mitigate that (I'll be picking up some eye screws later) but what about adding a cross brace to the front legs with a hinged piece that comes up and hooks to the rear to help it stay put?

Or am I over-engineering it w/o the slightest understanding of engineering?

I think I'm also going to add an eye bolt to either end of the rail for it to suspend from so it can't slip and slide.

Based on the need for the ground stake I guess I should opt for doing next weekend's hammock presentation outside rather than trying to use weights or something indoors, eh?

Okay, I had to make one after seeing everyone else's. And here it is.

I made it with 2x4s, 5/16" bolts, gate hinge, 3/8" eye bolts, and 1" galvanized pipe in two 6' sections with a coupler. It held my son Jimmy, his friend Justin, and finally me. I weigh in at 325#. It is one strong structure!

It was that in-line leg being pushed up too near the center that allowed a collapse that hit me in the head with the top rail. I have no angles on the tops of my posts, and now I have cords from leg to leg that guarantee a wide enough stance. No more taking chances for me.

Yeah, I almost wore a hard hat last night.

I think I'm good now. Sir Isaac Newton can't touch this...
