I notice some use the fence top rail "cap" rather than the eye-bolt on the ends of the horizontal support - which to me looks a little neater. As far as anyone knows are there any issues with either method? Is it just a matter of how you choose to go from there and attach the hammock to the rail, or attach the rail to the tripod? Also, is the line keeping the tripod legs from spreading necessary or is that just insurance if you were to use the stand on a slippery floor?

I used a top rail cap solely because I didn't have a drill beefy enough to drill the hole for the eyebolt. Ideally, I would rather have the eyebolt because it's more secure. The pressing force from the ham mocking compressing everything keeps it secure.

I use the line to ensure that I spread the legs consistently. I have it set for a 4 foot spread.

Hey folks! I just bought the materials to build my stand last night. I plan to suspend the center pole from a continuous loop and attach my webbing to the end of the pole on either side. For those who have done this, have you run into problems with webbing sliding forward into the continuous loop, or is that not really an issue?

I haven't read all 231 pages of this thread, so please forgive me if I ask two many questions. I'm planning to build one to use with a WBBB XLC. Here are my concerns. I have to hang the foot of the hammock a foot or more higher than the head end to get the proper lay. Can I make one of the end stands that much higher than the other? Most of the pictures I see show the pipe to be level end to end.

Can I make the pipe about 16 feet or more long? I usually try to find trees about that far apart to get the 30 degree angle on my suspension.

Hoping to hear from someone with experience with a WBBB XLC and 12'x 10' tarp.

My ridge pole is 16' and hammock is hung about 1' in on each side. I am using the aluminum military poles. I do hang the foot end few inches higher. I use a continuous loop and just make a few extra wraps around the ridge pole.

Thanks Novascotia and Squirrel bait. I'm still wondering about making the foot end tripod about a foot longer to get the WBBB XLC to hang the way I like.

It would make more sense to me to keep the tripods the same, and adjust your suspension to get your foot higher. I think if the ridge pole isn't nearly level, you're going to be adding factors that might make it more unstable as a whole unit.

I'd suggest making both tripods long first and experiment. If you can't achieve your goal, cut one down. You can always cut the second one down to match, if the uneven ridge pole idea doesn't work.

(my physics brain is being slow today... I think your idea is problematic, but I can't quite put my finger on why... )
