    The TurtleDog stand

Add one more to the mix. Yes, I overbuilt it. Yes, it's bigger than most folks specs that I've picked up, but I've already found a really wide range of flexibility with it. Besides.... I always have truck to carry it in when car campin. Thanks to everyone here for the input and design ideas.

Added a couple of my own touches (unless someone else has done it and I missed it). The double shackle and adjustable chain-using anchor is super flexible. Also, I put the stands into a perfect equilateral triangle and then measured out the necessary lengths of lash-it. I fed em through some pre drilled holes and then used Celtic button knots and a little back splice to stop em. Makes the setup real quick. Nice work Bill. Is that 1x2 box mild steel? It's hard to judge from the pics. I like the chain idea, which would potentially be useful in getting the hang dialed in especially if you like your feet a bit higher.

I used two 7' 3" top rail sections to ensure the span is close to 12 feet. Felt about perfect although near the ends of the rainfly support for the hammock. the scrap top rail from cutting down the other two is 3' 3" and I think I'll add that next time making it 17 foot span.

I'd previously posted that I'd completed a turtledog stand (I'm #153), but hadn't posted any pics yet.

One change I did was to add some ranger bands on the top rail to protect the hammock suspension from the edges of the nut/washers...had some concern that this might cause some fraying.

As a result...I didn't get a chance to actually put the stand up and test it under load until this past weekend. Luckily, my 3 year old grandson volunteered to help "Poppa" with his "'mocks".

Nope, but funny you should ask. My wife thought it was steel too, and she was lookin right at it. It's good straight 2x2 that I stained with some old old stain I had in the garage. I got it years ago to match the finish on the hot tub, and still had it lying around. It was super thick but it worked just fine.

I built the stand taller than most, and have already used the chain to adjust for different hammocks / preferences.

Yup. I think my next one will be a bit taller, too.
    Nicely done, Bill!

Like how much taller? Would you mind to share the specs? Length of leg, spread at the floor, vertical ht from top of tripod to floor.

    It looks really good.

Hey, thanks, I am pretty proud, it looks good. Specs:

    Legs 8'
Space between each leg on spread 68"
    Overall height 7'4"
Ground to bottom of double shackle 7'
    Chain length 11"
2 pc top rail 90" each (minus 3" off each end for the eyebolt inset, and minus another 3" for the swage)

Let me know if that's not clear or if you need more info.

That's very clear, and very huge! That deserves to be called a TDS-Max.
