SE, I absolutely love it. As a full time flake and former decorative painter, I am embarrassed that all my stands have been so bland and utilitarian only.

I am inspired and will now decorate my stands accordingly!

I hope we get to see a picture of this stand on the playa.

Oh the places you'll go ...

    HFG,

Thanks for the kind words. I make most of my own stuff and I make it for myself. I tend to see every unfinished surface as a potential canvas and the rest is easy. I will make certain that I post some Burn hammock photos in the Awesome Hang thread, because it is.

    Cheers

    Top pole

OK, I have been reading through the thread and it is long! I have not found the answer, so I will ask it:

Has anyone determined any minimum/maximum ranges on any parts of the stand?

I have a Hennessy Hex tarp over my HH Expedition Asym. I know the Hex is 12' long and I don't want to go too long on the top pipe/rail if it is going to become structurally unsafe.

Also, is there an optimum amount of spread on the legs?

The 10'6" top rail many use will accommodate a 11' hammock, given you make the suspension work. I have personally used a 16' top rail but favor a 14' for longer setups. (I cut two fence poles to 5' and 5' and 4' and 6' to give those options. I didn't find it unstable at any length up to 16')

This is just a matter of usage and dialing it in for your application, I think. My stands have been made to take up as little space as possible for indoor use, and I have made my tripods with shallow angles to keep the footprint as small as possible.
But for outdoor use I think they should be wider, especially if using tarps or in any other than ideal conditions, (like having a large flat area to set up in.)

If you're making it for outdoor use I'd say make it without the angled tops and get a good wide stance just for stability's sake. (or work out what the angle should be for a wider stance... I really need to do that...
And until you dial it in, just leave the tripods long. Just like with trees, the longer the hammock and the span the higher the suspension needs to be to keep your butt off the ground.

    Also, ask questions.

    The TurtleDog stand

Tnx. It will be for outdoor use, so I'm thinking I will keep the tripod legs a little longer for a wider stance and longer horizontal support.

So I want to make one of these stands for when I go car camping on the beach and there is nowhere to tie my hammock. I have a WBBB XLC and I put the head end a foot lower than the foot end as suggested. So when I build this stand do I make one tripod 6' tall and the other tripod 7' tall? Or do I build both tripods 7' tall and adjust my suspension?

Personally, I'd make 'em the same length and adjust the suspension. Gives you the option of hanging either way when you set up (so you can get either the sunrise or sunset depending on your preference that evening).
