Nice way to handle the lack of decent wood with the lamminated plywood Veto 65.

I am new to the world of hammocks - just got mine this week. This forum has a great amount of information and this thread in particular has been very helpful. I will be building one of these in the next month or so.

One question - I noticed that some of these rigged with tarps, the tarp is below the ridge pole. Why wouldn't you rig the tarp over the top of the ridge pole?

    Thanks - OFG

Welcome aboard ofg. The Turtlelady and it's spinoff the Turtledog were primarilarly developed as travel stands. The use of tarps was a later development for those who wanted to use them outside. Someone who has gone that route will be along with all the answers.

As far as tarps above/below pole. Depends on the material of the tarp. When wet some fabrics will conduct water thru when in contact with anything on the dry side.

My personal reason for not just laying my tarp on the pole is to try to avoid abrasion to the tarp, as when the wind blows and it moves. To keep it hanging as near to what it would be when hung between two trees is my goal. These tarps are not worth their weight in gold, but they aren't free either. Happy hanging.

    Turtledog with Bolts?

Made the stand the afternoon my kids (24, 26) came home for Xmas. I have a small house and when they both come home, I'm a bedroom short, but I have a heated garage with 1 hammock stand already. I decided they could both sleep in the garage if I had 2 stands and I've been eyeballing this project for a while. Gave it a go.

Upon testing with my 220 lbs, both my hinges bent, maybe they were too light, but I also found I had too much pole extending past the tripod attachment point and I think the stress caused the pole to push on the hinged leg and thus bend the hinge. After shortening the pole closer to the attachment point and bending the hinge back as best I could I put a couple wood screws in to hold the opposing leg in place. I didn't have time to go get another hinge. That worked real well. It also made the legs rigid and secure on top. I found I like that better when setting up. Seems more secure and less fuss.

I now use it in my bedroom about 4 out of 7 nites. I take it down about once a week or two for the extra room.

That got me to thinking about just using 4 bolt/washer/wing nut combos to hold the 3 legs together on top, vs using the hinge at all. Use two bolts on the top of the "A leg", with the bottom bolt low enough to expose an inch or so of length, just like the horizontal line on an "A", enough to attach a biner or soft shackle, etc... to attach to the pole. With the "A leg" bolts tight, you can use a couple bolt/washer/wing nut to attach the "Opposing" leg.

The trimmings from the legs to make them angle together on top can be wood screwed onto the legs on their respective opposing sides, again making the surface of the wood square so the bolts are seated flush vs at an angle on the wood.

With wingnuts, quick setup and take down is achieved, along with a rigid tripod when setup, making it easy to move around. I found I like that better by chance, having used wood screws to correct my hinge issue, but this stand isn't portable without removing the screws. Hassle w/o power tools.

So, soon I'll try that. Probably wear a helmet when I test it.

In the last pic, your missing a bolt. When I built mine, I used two bolts on the long part of the hinge......RR

I see two in the second pic. The third pic seems to not have the second bolt in view. I see the first couple of inches from the hinge pulled away from the back support like mine did. When I lined the back support up and bolted it on the entire length of the vertical hinge side was flat against the back post but when I applied weight it pulled away and bent slightly. Is this something that happens to most stands?
