    A few questions

Hi everybody! I have a few questions that maybe you can answer. The other day I went to salvation army and found a piece of ripstop that measures 5 feet wide and at least 20 feet long, haven't measured length yet, cost was $1.60. How do you tell the difference between 1.1oz. 1.7oz., etc. Also I am concerned about the width, do you think the material is wide enough to make a comfortable hammock? I was thinking of building a stretch side hammock with this material. Anybody got any suggestions? This hammock would be built for winter camping, no bug netting. Thanks.

5 foot wide is pretty standard, most is around 58 inches, so your good there. As for the weight, I will let someone else chime in on that. I know you can take certain measurement and cut it out and weigh it to get the correct answer but I forget how much it was.

If you have a JoAnn's or Hancock near by, all they carry is 1.7 ripstop. 1.1 ripstop feels significantly lighter. So, stop by one of those, find the "flag" cloth, feel it real good, then compare it to what you have. If what you have feels the same then it is 1.7. If what you have feels different, lighter then it is probably 1.1

It may not be either of those. If you have a scale that's accurate to the ounce then just weigh the fabric. Measure the length and width of the fabric in inches. Then use the formula

    weight in ounces / (inches long * inches wide / 36 / 36)

For example if the fabric is 5 ft by 20 ft and weighs about 18 ounces then you get

    18 / (60 * 240 / 36 / 36) = 1.6 ounces / sq yard

Very good information, I'll take some measurements and let you know what I come up with. Thanks.

A Durable Water Repellant (DWR) coating may give you a measurement that is not consistent with the terms frequently used here. It may be 1/10 of an ounce heavier or so. DWR usually has at least one side that is a little more shiney than the other or both sides may be shiny.

    1.1, 1.7, 1.9, etc...

Don't worry about what it weighs. You already have it. Make a hammock. It will be fine. Test over soft ground.

    Heres what I came up with. 15.4/ (60 x 272 / 36 / 36) = 1.22. This material does have a shiny side. Thanks for the help. I figure it is 1.1 oz. material.

FWIW...the shiny side indicates it is calendared. Nice find.
